Downtown Dancing

Dance Events in Downtown

Many nights, you will hear music coming from the second floor near SE 3rd Avenue and E Main Street in Downtown Hillsboro. You might also see smiling faces coming and going from a somewhat hidden stairwell between Piccolo Mondo Toys and Crystal Heart Boutiques. This is our local dance community in action upstairs in the Odd Fellows Hall, and they want to welcome everyone to join them.

The organizers of these dance events seek to build community in Hillsboro through the joy of live music and dancing. Hillsboro Downtown Partnership is helping connect the organizations and dance enthusiasts together so they can collaborate, share information about events, encourage dancers to learn about other forms of dancing, and find new ways to connect with our community.

1st Fridays of each month

Jazz era swing dance is an American social dance that includes Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing (Jitterbug), Balboa, and Charleston. With its origins in the 1920’s, 2020 is the perfect year to bring swing to Downtown Hillsboro! Much like the founders of Hillsboro’s Contra dance, Bailey Wilkerson, a Downtown resident and dance enthusiast, was inspired to bring an activity that is usually only available in Portland to Washington County. “Swing dancing is a fun way to be active, learn something new, and meet amazing people,” Bailey said.

Next event: March 6 at Hillsboro’s Odd Fellow Lodge

3rd Fridays of each month

With roots in a variety of European traditional dances, Contra is folk dance set to live music that is simple to learn and a fun way to socialize with others. According to Tarka Ayres, one of the volunteer organizers of Hillsboro Contra Dance, “There is a vibrant contra scene in the Pacific Northwest, but the closest dance has been the Portland Saturday dance for years. Starting a Friday dance series in Hillsboro created a local option and brings this fun and beginner-friendly folk dance tradition to new dancers.”

Scheduled for third Fridays throughout the year, Hillsboro Contra Dance started in 2018 and quickly adopted the beautiful Odd Fellows Hall as the home of their dance events. The organizers want to encourage everyone to come try Contra dancing.
