Description

District charm and that special ‘in-store, talk about it afterwards’ experience are the keys to unlocking your Downtown's competitive advantage. Whether you're a chiropractor or a coffee shop, a shoe store or flower shop, you'll want to know the building blocks that give you great curb appeal and affect your business's visibility. Lighting is a critical component of these building blocks. Correct lighting will maximize your 24/7 visibility as well as provide a sense of safety and well-being. Proper and effective district lighting is built in layers. Six layers to be exact. Learn what these layers are, why they're important, and where they should go. Lighting technology and terminology— including how to choose the "right" color white—will also be demystified. Being more informed about Lighting Best Practices will help you create safer, more energy efficient, and of course, more vibrant downtowns.

What will I learn?

  • Using light as a storyteller and a sales tool
  • The 6 layers of light that comprise a well-lit district
  • Important lighting terminology identified and simplified
  • What color “white” do people prefer
  • What fixtures to use (which ones to avoid) and their styles and uses
  • Strategies for creating proper window display lighting infrastructure
  • How to work with tinted windows and resolve why you look closed

Who should attend?

Downtown Revitalization Professionals: The session will provide tools and takeaways to help you evaluate your district lighting, allow you to advocate effectively for high quality and welcoming public lighting design and provide you with tools to help your businesses improve lighting in a way that will drive customers and improve sales.

Public Works Professionals: Municipal staff will learn about the impact of public lighting location, lamp and bulb selection and vehicular versus pedestrian focus on real and perceived public safety in the district. The presentation will feature several case studies of lighting schemes that add to and detract from the district experience.

Businesses: Any business located on a ground floor space, with regular operating hours, that receives clients or customers. Whether you own a service-based business such as legal, accounting, personal grooming or medical practice, food service such as coffee shop or restaurant or own a retail store. Every ground floor business contributes to the district’s overall look – no one’s off the hook.
