Tyler Geel and Evan Aldrete not only moved their headquarters to Downtown, they quickly became active and beloved members of the Downtown community.

Art for the sake of art. Coffee for the sake of coffee.

Insomnia Coffee Company began twelve years ago. Its sister company, Dapper & Wise Roasters, is the roasting end of the coffee shop. Owners Evan Aldrete and Tyler Geel, started the company in a central Hillsboro location. Since then, they have opened locations on SE Division in Portland, in Cannon Beach, and in Tanasbourne. The Downtown Hillsboro location is their fifth, yet largest location, and serves as the headquarters for Insomnia Coffee plus Dapper & Wise Roasters, serving all the other locations spanning from Portland to Cannon Beach.

The large space in Downtown sat vacant for five years, awaiting a savvy business to occupy it. Previously, the 8,000 square foot space was split between a medical equipment store and a gaming room. Insomnia Coffee Company leased the building with first right of refusal to purchase the property when it becomes available. “Our most recent move to the Downtown area,” tells Evan, “came out of a need for a smart location and a building with charm.” The big empty shell was made into one of Downtown’s biggest draws, and one of the most utilized community gathering places in all of Hillsboro.

The entire interior was done to fit the Insomnia Coffee brand. It has beautiful new floors, walls, ceilings, and decor. The back end of the shop holds their roasting facility, and they’ve created a space in the middle that houses the headquarter offices for their staff. In addition, they’ve built a Dapper & Wise Coffee Lab to educate the public, train baristas, and conduct quality control.

Before the buildout for the coffee shop in 2016, this space was occupied a variety of businesses.

In addition to bringing a new crowd of students and youth to Downtown Hillsboro, the space has also has brought clientele to Downtown from companies like Nike and Intel. The business is open late daily, taking advantage of the revitalizing efforts being made Downtown. Tyler told us, “With Downtown Hillsboro seeing an increased investment in quality dining and retail experiences, we felt it time to bring our following to Downtown.”

Insomnia Coffee initially employed 12 people in the Downtown location and has since added six more. The front-end café opened its doors in February 2017 to produce revenue while completing the remaining build-out. The business took advantage of the City of Hillsboro’s Downtown Storefront Improvement Grant Program for the new pedestrian friendly windows, exterior lighting, paint job, and signage. The interior build-out was approximately $275,000 to complete the café, coffee lab, coffee roaster, and office.

Downtown Hillsboro is proud to house the new headquarters of Insomnia Coffee Company. The strong vision and values of these business owners has led to their enormous interior renovation and savvy business plan, bringing new life and energy to Downtown Hillsboro. “We have been pleased with the result!” said Evan. “We have a hope for a few other essential businesses to come and join us to make this a destination of shopping and entertainment that will be sought after in our community.”
