Whether someone is visiting Downtown Hillsboro for the first time or driving through for the umpteenth, the Beautification Assistants that work for Hillsboro Downtown Partnership get to take pride in knowing that they have a huge role in making everyone feel welcome. Beautification Assistants are the folks that keep things clean and tidy, make things bright and colorful, and demonstrate how we can all make Downtown a better place to live, work, and play. They are essential team members in our work to cultivate and amplify a vibrant Downtown Hillsboro community.

RESPONSIBILITIES
In this position, you will primarily be responsible for…

  • groundskeeping. Keeping Downtown clean and tidy helps people feel welcome and safer. Here are the duties that will occupy most of your time. This will be around 60% of the time. This includes: litter pickup; graffiti removal; sidewalk sweeping and shoveling; trash removal; surface cleaning (benches, signs, windows; pressure washing; painting.
  • landscaping. Once things are clean, it’s time to beautify the space with healthy trees, shrubs, and beautiful flowers. We use electric equipment as often as possible, so it’s quieter and doesn’t put of fumes. This will be around 20% of the time. This includes: weed removal; leaf blowing; grass mowing; weed whacking; planter watering and fertilizing; light pruning of trees, shrubs, and herbs.
  • customer service. Because this position is working in public spaces, interacting with the public is an important component of the work. This may be as simple as making eye contact and saying “Hello!” to answering a question or handing out a brochure. This will be around 10% of the time.
  • team support. We regularly meet as a team to support each other’s work. This may include asking and/or receiving help on a difficult task, learning new skills, sharing ideas, or working at an event that requires everyone’s support to make it a success. This will be around 10% of the time.

LOCATION: The duties of this position will all occur in Downtown Hillsboro (approx. 14th Avenue to Dennis Avenue, east to west; and Grant Street to Maple Street, north to south). Our office is at 233 SW Washington Street, which we use as a meeting point and start location. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: This position receives supervision from the HDP Executive Director, and direction from the Beautification Coordinator and Specialists.

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED: This position may exercise some direction over volunteers.

HOURS: Minimum 20 hours per week. May increase, based on demand and funding. Your schedule will mostly consist of daytime shifts throughout the week, with occasional evening and holiday work. The supervisor will work with you to create a schedule that meets your needs and those of organization.

PAY: Range starts at $15 per hour.

BENEFITS
Accrued sick leave – one hour for every 30 hours worked.
PTO – one hour for every 12 hours worked.
