The Hillsboro Downtown Partnership is bringing back the Window Artist Takeover with an expanded vision for 2027.
Twice a year, during our Spring and Fall Window Artist Takeovers, local artists will transform storefront windows throughout Historic Downtown Hillsboro and Avenida Diez into temporary works of public art.
The program brings artists, businesses, and community members together to celebrate creativity, activate commercial spaces, and give local artists a highly visible platform for their work.
Not every great public art experience has to happen inside a gallery.
The Window Artist Takeover turns the streets of Hillsboro into a walkable public art experience, placing original artwork directly into the places where people shop, work, eat, gather, and move through their community every day.
By partnering artists with local businesses and property owners, HDP creates opportunities to:
Provide paid professional opportunities for local and emerging artists
Activate storefronts and underutilized windows with temporary public art
Build relationships between artists, businesses, and neighborhoods
Highlight the creativity and cultural identity of Hillsboro
Encourage residents and visitors to explore local businesses and commercial districts
Create accessible art experiences that are free and open to everyone
Two Neighborhoods. One Creative Community.
Beginning in 2027, the Window Artist Takeover will expand beyond Historic Downtown Hillsboro to include Avenida Diez.
This expansion reflects HDP’s growing engagement with businesses and community members along Avenida Diez and creates new opportunities for artists, businesses, and residents from both districts to help shape the visual identity of their neighborhoods.
Our goal is not simply to bring art into these communities, but to create a program in which the people who live, work, create, and operate businesses there have a meaningful role in what the program becomes.
Spring + Fall Takeovers
The Window Artist Takeover will take place twice each year, with new artists and installations featured during the spring and fall.
Each seasonal takeover will include a new group of paid artists, participating businesses throughout Historic Downtown and Avenida Diez, artist profiles and storytelling, and opportunities for the public to experience the installations throughout the season.
Feedback from participating artists, businesses, and community members will also help shape future takeovers.
Meet the Artists Window Tour
New in 2027, HDP plans to introduce a Meet the Artists Window Tour as part of each seasonal takeover.
Community members will be invited to explore participating windows, meet the artists behind the work, learn about their inspiration and creative process, and discover businesses and places throughout Historic Downtown and Avenida Diez.
The tour will transform the Window Artist Takeover from something people simply see into an experience that brings people together through art.
Calling Artists & Businesses
Artist and business participation opportunities for the Spring 2027 Window Artist Takeover will be announced as the program develops.
Artists of varying backgrounds, styles, and levels of professional experience will be encouraged to participate. HDP especially hopes to create opportunities for emerging artists and artists whose voices and perspectives have historically had fewer opportunities to be represented through public art.
Businesses and property owners in Historic Downtown Hillsboro and Avenida Diez will also have opportunities to offer their windows as temporary canvases for participating artists.
