Holiday Shopping Season

When you think “shop local”, it’s hard not to imagine Downtown Hillsboro. The options can fulfill the wishes of those friends and family members that you have on your holiday gift list, and Downtown businesses have several ways for you to add community and fun to your shopping experiences.

The name Plaid Friday was conceived from the idea of weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses the day after Thanksgiving. Created in 2009 in Oakland, CA and adopted in Downtown Hillsboro in 2018. Wear some plaid when you are shopping at these businesses on November 28, and take advantage of the special they are offering just to you.

Shop Small® and do something big. According to research done by American Express, for every $1 spent at a small business, an average of $0.67 stays in the community. Wow, that’s a huge impact! And if that’s not motivation enough, come on Downtown and see the specials that our small businesses have running just for you. Volunteers will be setup with a welcome booth at 3rd and Main to help you with your gift search by sharing info about our local shops and some of the products and services they have to offer.

You may think that Downtown is a closed for business on Sundays, but that assumption is a thing of the past. As we get more and more sophisticated retailers, restuarants, and personal service providers established Downtown, more and more businesses are open on Sundays, especially through the holiday season.  So come on down and shop on Sunday! Thank businesses for being open, show your support by buying something, and tell your friends: Downtown Hillsboro is open for business on Sundays! Check out this list of businesses that are open Sundays through Christmas.

Cyber shopping doesn’t mean that you have to give up the local shopping vibe. Several Downtown businesses have online shopping options for both products and gift cards. Check out this list of businesses that have online stores or catalogs for you to peruse. And if you need a mellow place to shop, Insomnia and Starbucks have free Wifi and great coffee.

GivingTuesday inspires millions of people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter to them. The goal is to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day, and touches every person on the planet. We believe one of the best ways to give back is to support local causes in our community, and there are many local charities that are headquartered in Downtown. Many of our businesses are also holding drives for other community organizations. You can even give a gift in the name of someone on your list that is hard to shop for and check two things off that holiday to-do-list.

Celebrate the holiday season at the annual Holly Days Tree Lighting & Artisan Fair in historic Downtown Hillsboro on Saturday, December 5. Artisans showcase their best handmade work at this bustling market, while carolers, live music, and activities for all ages abound. Downtown merchants will also be open for business with a variety of in-shop activities and promotions. The Civic Center Plaza will be full of holiday cheer and excitement leading up to the awe-inspiring tree lighting at 5:30 pm.

BUSINESS PARTICIPATION: Many of our Downtown businesses are able to participate in all of these events, and some have to scale down their participation, because they aren’t big enough yet, but we love them all the same. If you are a Downtown business and would like to support or participate in one of these events, please email info@downtownhillsboro.org.
