AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Auditions will be round robin style reading sides.  Sides will be emailed starting no later than September 8, 2026 to ONLY those signed up to audition. 

Audition Info: We will audition these characters by sending out sides from the text to prepare.  The sides do not need to be memorized, but should be prepared.  Please keep the text in your hands while you audition. Characters:

• HENRY GOODENOUGH - Age: 20s
  Type: Callow youth whose tankard is always more than half full. Romantic, poetic, sincere, irrepressible, lovesick.            
  Description: Henry is an optimistic young man returning to his childhood hometown of Thatwhich, a market town south of London. He has been away for several years and has just finished serving an apprenticeship in London with the Privy Council. He plans to marry and start a family.  As it turns out, Henry is still madly in love with childhood sweetheart Penelope. Nothing will stand in this bard wannabe’s way in pursuit of dear Penelope. Except, perhaps, her father or her sister or a bailiff or Penelope’s sudden and mysterious illness. The course of true love is never a smooth run. Just ask Henry. Some physicality required; good comic timing and facial expressions a plus.
  
  

• RUFUS STOUT - Age: 20-30s
  Type: Snarky rapscallion, always getting in trouble, smart-ass banana man, cynical sidekick, rebellious
  Description: Town delinquent and Henry’s sidekick because every hero must have one. Rufus doesn’t care if his tankard is half-empty, half-full, or full of dish water, because he’ll drink anything. Rufus perhaps would have been better named Randy. He has a, uh, ahem, a hard time keeping his calling card in his codpiece. Rufus enjoys a good caper (the act, not the berry) and helps guide Henry through a town that has seen many changes. Role requires good comic timing and facial expressions.
  
  

• LADY GERTRUDE SUTTON - Age: Late teen-early 20s
  Type: Sweet, romantic, strong willed, fearless, likes a little intrigue in life
  Description: Gertrude is Penelope’s younger sister. She fiercely protects Penelope and is willing to repel all suitors at any cost. Before Penelope came down with a mysterious illness, she was Gertrude’s guardian. Now the role has flipped, and it is Gertrude’s turn to be the responsible one. Unfortunately, she feels it is also her time to start enjoying life. Since the Plague, the entire family has been living in lock-down mode on the family estate. Gertrude craves to be able to socialize again and misses other people and parties and dances. In a word, she suffers from FOMO (fear of missing out).
  
  

• LADY PENELOPE SUTTON - Age: 20s
  Type: Sweet, beautiful, romantic, languid
  Description: Penelope took charge of her sister and her father, after her mother was struck down by the Plague. Everyone depended upon Penelope until one day they couldn’t. Worn down by events, Penelope has withdrawn and taken a vow of silence. She may not choose to talk but she is fully aware of what is happening and responds with facial expressions or physical gestures. Strong miming capabilities required. Penelope grew up with Henry and remains madly in love with him.
  
  

• TOWN CRIER - Age: Indeterminate
  Type: Serious, confident, proud, loud, commands attention
  Description: The Town Crier plays a limited but key role. His appearance sets the tone and helps ground the story in both time and place. He carries a lantern and a handbell wherever he goes. The Town Crier should possess a booming voice that can break stained glass and magic spells in a single cry. The character speaks in sound bites like today’s clickbait. May be played by either male or female.
  
  

• BAILIFF - Age: Indeterminate
  Type: Proud, intimating, curt, direct, loud
  Description: Bailiff is the law-and-order symbol for the town. He works closely with Mayor Sutton and rarely leaves the mayor’s side. Most of the town’s residents live in fear of the man. Some physicality required; must be able to run during a chase scene.
  
  

• THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MAYOR SUTTON - Age: 40s-60s
  Type: Gruff confident, serious, intimating
  Description: Mayor Sutton runs the town with an iron fist and a loyal bailiff. He’s been a widower since losing his wife, the mother of both Penelope and Gertrude, the last time the Plague swept through town. Understandably, he is over-protective of his daughters and has ordered them to remain inside the family’s estate grounds.
  
  

• PREACHER STICKLER - Age: 50-70s
  Type: Arrogant, judgmental, officious, fire & brimstone preacher
  Description: Preacher Stickler is an early adopter of Puritanism and is on a mission from God. His goal is to root out evil and save souls in the town of Thatwhich. The only thing that can get in his way is his sinful sweet tooth, an addiction he is unable to break. Get thee behind me, Sugar.
  
  

• HECKLER - Age: 40-50s
  Type: Loud, shrill, brash, insult comic’s attitude
  Description: Heckler is Rufus’s mother, which is revealed during the course of the play. She stalks her son because she worries about him. That said, her level of discourse is bawdy banter. Put another way, the role of Heckler is a twist on the use of colorful insults. Think Shakespeare or Black Adder. Comic timing, facial expressions helpful. May also appear as part of ensemble crowd scene.
  
  

• LUCILLE - Age: 20-40s
  Type: Upbeat, aggressive, sleezy-salesy, always pushing product
  Description: Lucille is a fast-talking entrepreneur. And she has to be to survive. Unemployment is high and the living is not easy in the town of Thatwhich. Role requires a strong voice and good comic timing. May also appear as part of ensemble crowd scene.
  
  

• SARAH CUNNING - Age: 20-30s
  Type: Smart, mysterious, friendly, nurturing
  Description: Sarah is a folk healer known around town for her potions and natural remedies. She is typically dressed in a smock or apron and wears a wreathe of herbs and flowers on her head. Earth Goddess. Should be played straight and not as a hippy-dippy type. She is a medical professional, after all.
  
  

• Synopsis: All’s Well that Ends Sufficiently is a comic romp set in Merry Old England. The year is 1560, give or take, and the town is Thatwhich, an up-and-coming market town south of London. When Thatwhich native Henry Goodenough, a self-proclaimed bard, ends his apprenticeship with the Privy Council in London, he returns home to marry childhood sweetheart Lady Penelope. Alas and alack, the course of true love never runs smooth. Penelope’s father is the Right Worshipful Mayor of Thatwhich and is overly protective of his family, especially since the plague swept through the town, killing his wife and the family's two favorite dogs. To complicate matters further – and unknown to Henry -- Lady Penelope suffers from an unknown curse and remains mute. Lady Gertrude, her younger sister, guards Penelope and won't let anyone near her. Poor Henry. What's a lovesick suitor to do?
