A Tree Full of Hope: Why You Need to Visit Downtown Hillsboro's Wishing Tree

Last Updated 9/26/2025Posted in FEED: Neighborhood News, FEED: Destination Downtown

Right in the heart of Downtown Hillsboro, at the corner of East Main Street and NE 2nd Avenue, stands a truly special landmark: the Hillsboro Wishing Tree.

sheltering the edge of the Washington County Courthouse lawn, is a place of unity, hope, and collective dreams—a beautiful example of public art brought to life by the community.

What is the Wishing Tree?

Inspired by an international tradition, the Hillsboro Wishing Tree is an annual initiative that runs every October. It's an invitation to every single person in our community to pause, reflect, and share their deepest aspirations.

The concept is simple and profoundly moving:

  1. Write Your Wish: You are invited to write your hopes, fears, or inspirations on an eco-friendly tag.

  2. Hang It Up: These wishes are then tied to the graceful, sweeping branches of the elm tree.

  3. Become One: As more and more tags are added, the tree transforms into a mesmerizing, fluttering tapestry of our community's collective voice.

From broad hopes like "everyone gets along" to more personal dreams, the Wishing Tree holds a silent, powerful record of what matters most to the people of Hillsboro.

More Than Just a Decoration

The Wishing Tree initiative, led by local supporters like Hillsboro Downtown Together, is more than a beautiful sight—it's a deliberate act of community building. It was originally created to send a clear message: All are welcome here.

The choice of the location, near the courthouse, was intentional, providing a space of refuge and welcome to all residents, celebrating our diversity and affirming a sense of belonging for everyone.

It's a chance to literally see your neighbors' humanity and realize you are not alone in your journey. Whether you're hanging a tag or just taking a moment to read the thousands of anonymous aspirations, you become part of a shared, hopeful experience.

Go Make Your Wish!

While the most concentrated period of participation is during Arts Month in October, the spirit of the Wishing Tree lives all year long.

Next time you’re Downtown, take a detour to the corner of Main and 2nd. Stand beneath the protective, sprawling branches of this beautiful elm. Take a moment to reflect on your own hopes for the future and for our amazing city.

The Hillsboro Wishing Tree is a firmly rooted symbol that proves when we share our voices, we grow stronger, together.

Location: Northwest corner of E Main Street and NE 2nd Avenue (by the Washington County Courthouse)
